Notes from the GTA for this student: MA submitted 3 JARS as hard copies late (>30 days). I explained to him that we only accept JAR submissions through Turnitin, and that I cannot grade hard copies. He said he would submit it to Turnitin. When I tried to open the file through Turnitin, there was no score reading, and I could not open the files. I emailed MA, and explained that he would have to submit Word documents. I checked again, and nothing was submitted. I asked Dr. Sanders, and he reviewed the hard copies and said that it was AIV due to not writing about the experiment we ran in lab. They were similar, but not the same. I entered 0’s with an explanation of not being able to open the files several days before grades were due. The day the grades were due, (final lab meeting), I received several frantic emails about 0’s being entered, and that he sent the files to me. I explained to him via email that the 0 grades were entered with an explanation. He asked if he could come meet me to talk about it. I told him, “No, “and that he would have to speak with Dr. Sanders. He asked for his email (on the syllabus, but I gave it to him anyway). He emailed Dr. Sanders, and Dr. Sanders gave him a chance to upload the Word files. As of today, 5/7/2019-several days after grades were finalized, no Word file was uploaded. The files submitted to Turntin are Rpage files. They translate to JPEG (photos which cannot be detected by Turnitin). I looked through his hardcopy files. Notes: Atomic Spectra – Title page incorrect Running head at the top Objectives listed do not match listed objectives in our experiment Layout of JAR is incorrect E=hc/v was discussed, but not used in this lab. He discussed using meter sticks in the experiment, but none were used. We did not use Bohr’s theory. We used the calibration curve of helium and the Rydberg equation. There was mention of 3 rings stands and meter sticks – not used His procedure discusses inserting and removing discharge tubes – not done Rubber stopper and utility clamp – not used List of his tables not included: Helium calibration table, Helium calibration curve Hydrogen table with Rydberg calculations, Hg table, Nobel gas Table, and observations were all omitted. Lab manual not cited Chromatography – Purpose not included Structures inserted at top No lab manual cited Empirical Formula of a Hydrate? – He entitled his report as Determination of Chemical Formula p.3 – aluminum wire – not used photos at the bottom with formulas – The lab benches and balance area do not look like that. Separating CuCl out from the hydrate and the Cu was not that simple and not that clean of a separation. There was aluminum foil in the separation of Cu step. Using the anhydrate for Part B was not done. We did not dry under a heat lamp. Missing lab manual citation
