Unit 5: Kingdoms Animalia and Plantae (from Wed, 02/24/21 - to Tue, 03/02/21)

Introduction

Welcome to Unit 5! Finally, we get to the part about cocaine. It’s not what you might think! Although you will investigate how cocaine affects human behavior and health, what we are really interested in here is how plants have developed adaptations that make them fit best in their environments. This includes the coca plant. In Unit 3, you learned how traits are inherited by offspring. In Unit 4, you analyzed how the environment puts pressure on populations such that some traits become more common than others—this is why the coca plant makes cocaine. Cocaine protects the plant from being eaten by insects while enhancing its reproduction by making honeybees euphoric. By putting all of the pieces together and looking at whole organisms, you will explore the adaptations of plants and animals that make them fit best in their environmental conditions. Then, you’ll discover how humans take advantage of these modifications as drugs, products, and processes for their own benefit. In this unit, you will do the following:

• Explore the adaptations of plants that allow for enhanced protection and reproduction
• Detail the characteristics of animal phyla
• Compare and contrast the anatomy and physiology of animals with humans
• Investigate the use of plant and animal products and processes for human advancement
