Unit 2: Cell Biology and Biochemistry (from Wed, 02/03/21 - to Tue, 02/09/21)
Introduction
Welcome to Unit 2! Did you ever wonder why you need to breath? Of course, you likely know that cutting off oxygen to a person can result in death – drowning, suffocation and some poisons do exactly this. In this Unit we will investigate what cells are and how they work. Cells need energy to grow, develop and perform their functions. Without energy the cells die. Our cells, and those of most organisms, get this energy through a process called aerobic cellular respiration. This process requires oxygen. Without oxygen, the cells cannot make energy and they die. See the link now? By studying the biochemical processes of cells, we can apply these to our own health – we need oxygen because our cells need energy! Plant cells can convert sunlight energy into chemical energy for their cells. We eat the plants to get that energy. What if we could use sunlight like plants? In this unit, you will learn about the two classes of cells: prokaryotic and eukaryotic. You will explain how drugs can target the cellular components of one of these cells (bacteria), but not the other (human), and you will demonstrate your understanding of photosynthesis by imagining a future in which humans and animals might use chloroplasts the way plants do. In this unit, you will:
“It’s humbling to think that all animals, including human beings, are parasites of the plant world.” — Isaac Asimov The step-by-step guide below will help keep you organized as you complete the objectives for Unit 2. Reference
