Chapter 7 Assignment Evaluation of Personal and Performance Orientation
This assignment supports the following course objectives:
Appraise leadership qualities of a healthcare supervisor, including personality, management
styles and education.
Directions:
At the end of Chapter 7 there is a section entitled: How well suited are you to the supervisory
role? In this section there are 2 figures that discuss personal and performance orientation. As
the text states the “relative effectiveness of many supervisors in the work force can be directly
related to how well, personally and temperamentally” they are suited for the role.
In this assignment you are going to read the Personal Orientation section in your text (pages
123 to 125) and then you are going to conduct a self-evaluation. After your evaluation, you are
going to discuss what quadrant you feel best matches your current personal orientation and
why. In a very thorough evaluation of yourself indicate where you fell on the axis and the
quadrant. In a one full page minimum double-spaced narrative indicate how you arrived at
your conclusion. (Please do not just copy the statements from the text). Keep in mind your
narrative will be addressing the questions in the text: How well you fit into the supervisory
role? And what you need to work on to improve the way you fit into a supervisory role. Be sure
to assess your focus. Are you more externally focused, internally focused, or somewhere in-
between? Examine your scope. Is your scope broad, narrow, or where do you fall in between?
Please provide examples from your personal, school or work experiences to support your
evaluation.
Next you are going to do the same as above with evaluating your Performance Orientation
(pages 125 to 127). Again, your evaluation should be double spaced and a minimum of one
page. Be sure to assess if your emphasis is personal, functional, or where you are in between.
Examine your posture are you more assertive or reactive or somewhere in between. Please
provide examples from your personal, school or work experiences to support your evaluation.
Once you have identified the quadrant that best fits you for your Personal and Performance
Orientation read over How Well Do You Fit? (pages 127 to 129). State 2 realistic and
measurable goals that you will want to work on to help you improve your managerial skills. One
of your goals should be related to your personal orientation and the other related to
performance orientation as well as your evaluation.

There is no correct or incorrect answer(s)/results. You are graded on how well you evaluated
yourself and if your assessment was thorough. To earn a C or better you need to meet the
minimum requirements. Remember this activity is only trying to help you be a better manager.
As the text states, “Simply identifying one’s own weakness is a large part of the struggle for
improved effectiveness.” Please also be reminded that work needs to be original and from this
semester.
Please upload this entire document to Canvas, making no formatting changes. The following
pages are already formatted for your double-spaced evaluations. Please remove any additional
line spacing. Please be reminded that your work needs to be from this semester. Also, please
remember to use paragraphs and indent a new paragraph.
