Makeup Advertisements

By Ashley Renio

Tarte

The Tarte Shape Tape Foundation only came out with 18 shades, however in the ad they only showed 15 of the shades. One thing to point out is that out of the 15 shades shown most of them are for medium skin tones and only 4 were made for deeper skin tones. Also, for almost all the fair and medium skin tones it is only white females. Lastly, one thing I want to point out that I applaud tarte for is that for their medium sand shade they had a male model.

Maybelline

Maybelline’s Dream Velvet Foundation came out with only 12 shades. Unlike Tarte, Maybelline used only one model and they photoshop her in two different shades in each picture. Also, if you look at the shades they show in the ad there is only one or maybe two shades that can be used for deeper skin tones while the others are more for fair or medium skin tones.

YSL

The YSL All Hours Foundation originally only came out with 22 shades, but now they offer 33 shades. This was one of the ads they came out with when they were first launching the foundation, and as you can see once again they focus on more fair and medium skin tones. Like Maybelline, there are only 2 shades for deeper skin tones. Also, unlike the other brands they didn’t use models to present the different shades instead they just showed swatches.

Fenty Beauty

Fenty Beauty launched last year in September and they came out with 40 foundation shades. Fenty Beauty is owned by Rihanna. As you can see in the ad, they had a diverse group of models to represent the shades they offer. Fenty is one of the few brands that focus on all skin tones. In the shades they offer, there is an even number of fair, medium, and deep skin tones.

Huda Beauty

Huda Beauty is owned by Beauty Blogger Huda Kattan. Huda Beauty launched their Faux Filter Foundation in October 2017. The Huda Beauty foundation ad is very similar to the Fenty Beauty ad. The Faux Filter Foundation was launched with 30 shades. In the ad they not only had men represent some of their shades, but they also had a Muslim women in their ad. Like the Fenty Beauty ad, they focused on all skin tones.

Conclusion

Only Fenty Beauty and Huda Beauty focused on all skin tones and made sure that they used a diverse group of people in their ads. Tarte, Maybelline, and YSL had limited shades for deeper skin tones and those three brands got a lot of back lash after launching their foundation. Additionally, Huda Beauty and Tarte were the only brands that had some men model some shades. This is something I wish more brands did. Today it is more accepted that men can openly wear makeup without being mistreated or judged. Lastly, I was happy to see that in the Huda Beauty ad there was a Muslim women wearing one of their shades. Especially with what is going on in the U.S today I was pleased to see that these people were still being represented in some way.
