Abortion
The topic of abortion has brought a lot of controversies in most nations especially the United States. Many people believe abortion is not right because it endangers the life of the mother and the unborn child. On the other hand, some people believe abortion is solemnly an individual’s decision because every individual is the sole owner of his body and every decision that affects his body. When abortion was legalized in 1973 after the Supreme Court’s verdict following Roe Wade’s case, many conflicts arose between the pro-choice and pro-life supporters. The conflicting viewpoints arise from different religious beliefs, moral standards, and philosophical values. The state government established at least one abortion clinic in all the states, leading to increased abortion rates since then. The pro-life supporters believe that abortion is murder since life commences at conception. Therefore, there advocate strongly for the nonexistence of abortion even if the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape. On the other side, the pro-choice supporters believe that people have the right and freedom to choose to terminate their pregnancy because they have complete control and ownership over their bodies. They think it is not suitable for the government to decide on behalf of those who want abortions.
To solve these dilemmas, the state government should develop efficient and effective mechanisms to prevent unwanted pregnancies amongst women. They should also come up with strict restrictions to facilitate abortion where necessary. Abortions should only be allowed when the pregnancy proves to be tough and complicated. Schools and communities should offer sexual education to teach people to avoid unwanted pregnancies. The government should also provide free and sufficient contraceptives to help women prevent such unwanted pregnancies. With all these measures in place, both pro-life and pro-choice supporters will achieve their end results.
