week 8
Access control plays a huge role in the protection of data. As more organizations and business entities get to try and make use of the available data, it makes them susceptible to data criminals who are always on the lookout on the ways they can tamper with that data. Access control therefore comes in as the first way in which data can be protected in any organization.
One of the major goals of access control is to minimise the people who have the ability to use and make changes to certain data. Avoiding unauthorized access is the first way in which access control protects data. Clough B. (2013) states that “the basic access controls which are enabled where access control has been implemented include authentication and authorization which can then make the existence of data in a way in which its integrity and security is assured”. The auditing of the entry and electronic systems is also another way in which access control plays a huge role in the protection of data. The protection of the data assets that an organization has in its custody is one of the main reasons for the use of access control.
Access control administration makes it easy to implement whatever structures have been used in the organization and the existence of hybrid solutions to whatever access control needs an organization ay have there is an option that can be tailored for the needs of a particular organization. Access control has inbuilt capabilities which make it a threat monitoring tool. There are many threats that the data contained in any organization can be exposed to and this makes it easy for different countermeasures to be easily explored (Amir & Morteza, 2019). The different programs and policies that make up the whole access control structure have been put in place to ensure that confidential information stays so and the integrity of data is not compromised by any means.
