personal statement for college in London for pre masters in business
Abhik Gupta
Ever since high school I have always taken leadership roles, and always proactively volunteered
to take managerial and organizational responsibilities. Thus, through various academic, extra-
curricular and community related activities, I have been subconsciously honing my
management abilities. By learning how to lead teams effectively and motivating each team-
member to perform to the best of their capabilities, I have sharpened my leadership skills. By
organizing events in college and completing all tasks within strict timelines, I have developed
my organizational abilities. I am now keen to pursue a formal degree in the field of Innovation
Management and Entrepreneurship to further sharpen my existing skill set and prepare myself
for the much more challenging managerial and entrepreneurial roles that I aspire to take on in
my future career.
Pursuing the Bachelor of Commerce, Honours degree at the University of Delhi, I have taken
several academic courses in fields of management, business studies, accounting and finance,
economics and marketing strategies. My undergraduate studies have thus given me a concrete
base for research and study in Management and other managerial courses. Apart from
academics, I have also utilized my college years to participate in extra-curricular activities that
have allowed me to lead teams and manage varied responsibilities and entrepreneurial
activities. As a senior member of the debating team of our college, I have led my team to win
debating contests at the inter-varsity level. I also helped to manage the organisation of the
Guru-Shishya Debate held at our university. My leadership skills have also helped me at the
sports field, wherein as the Vice-Captain of the Cricket team of the university, I have often
devised strategies, team-tactics and sporting plans allowing us to outsmart the competition and
win coveted sporting trophies.
I have also grabbed every opportunity to engage myself in meaningful academic projects,
learning opportunities at international universities, and industry internships to gain a pragmatic
and more holistic perspective of the field of business management. By pursuing a summer
school at London School of Economics, I interacted with business students from all parts of
world and worked collaboratively with them to complete academic assignments and projects.
This stint gave my managerial learning a much needed international perspective.
In 2015, I pursued a summer internship with a telecommunications company where I assisted
the managerial team in formulating new advertising plans to help grow the flagship brand and
make innovative changes in the marketing strategy for the brand. The subsequent summer I
worked with another reputed business organization where I worked with clients and team
managers to find novel solutions for their business problems. The most rewarding of my
internships was during the summer of 2017 where I worked alongside the senior execution and
business development team of a real-estate development company. I was involved in assessing
the financial viability of a new real-estate development project, and in doing so was able to

learn several practical facets of the world of business management. All these internships, albeit
in different industries, helped me to appreciate the management styles of my superiors and
managers under whose guidance I was able to contribute to the firms. I was also able to
uncover my own entrepreneurial abilities and passion for devising and developing innovative
business strategies.
In order to gain advanced skills in the domain of management and entrepreneurship, I am
applying to the Masters in Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship program at Imperial
College London. I feel that learning under the guidance of your reputed faculty will augment
my abilities to build an illustrious career in the field of management and innovation by helping
me learn about the latest developments in the world of global business opportunities, novel
styles of marketing, and efficient styles of leadership. I will then be able to make the best use of
my passion for business to add value to whichever international business enterprises that I
work with by helping them make better marketing decisions, drive innovative changes and
build new business divisions.
The highly reputed graduate program at Imperial College London provides myriads of
opportunities for me to channelize my entrepreneurial and analytical skills in a greatly
encouraging and stimulant environment. Along with technical knowledge of business principles,
accounting rules, and marketing strategies, associating with campus organizations and research
centres will also provide me with the perfect platform to learn the fundamentals of all the
diverse fields in business.
Moreover, Imperial is world-renowned for preparing and producing leaders. At multiple
instances in high school and college, and in my community in India, I have taken up the
responsibility that comes with being a leader. I plan to actively participate in presentations
made by guest speakers, leadership workshops, and the other fantastic programs conducted by
Imperial. Also the global nature of the MSc Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship
program at Imperial will bring me in contact with people from different parts of the world, thus
allowing me a chance to understand different viewpoints and ideas.
I would be very proud to be a part of the student community of the Imperial Business School
that has earned itself a distinct reckoning amongst the best in the world. My propensity
towards challenging real-world business problems will enable me to channelize my energy
towards pursuing my goals. My application is a crucial step towards shaping my career and I am
confident that should my candidature be considered favorably, I shall live up to the high
standards of your institution as a worthy student.
