What is User Experience?
User Experience
A person’s perceptions and responses that result from the use of a product or system
Includes all of a person’s physical and psychological responses that occur before, during and after use

7 Universal Design Principles
Equitable use: the design is useful and marketable to people with diverse abilities.
E.g. rocker switch to turn on/off lights
Flexibility of use: accommodates wide range of individual preferences and abilities, including right- or left-handed access and use
E.g. hand mixers with swivel cord
7 Universal Design Principles
Simple and intuitive use: easy to understand
Handle for the faucet
Perceptible information: Communicates effectively
“Walk, don’t walk” display
7 Universal Design Principles
Tolerance for error: minimizes hazards
Handrails to separate in and out traffic lanes
Low physical effort: Can be used efficiently and comfortably and with minimum fatigue
Ergonomic keyboard
Size and space approach and use
Sliding drawer in kitchen cabinet
Design standards for computer-based interactive systems
ISO (International Standardization Org) ISO-9241 has 2 parts
ISO 9241-110:2006 – defines the ergonomic design principles
ISO 9241-210:2010 – provides requirements and recommendations for human-centered design principles
these standards lay the foundation for superior design
The User-Centered Design (UCD) Process
UCD is a process in which at each stage of a product’s design, designers pay extensive attention to the needs, wants and limitations of end-users
Requirements
Design
Development
Verification
Delivery
User-Experience
The User-Centered Design (UCD) Process
The main difference between UCD and other product design philosophies is that UCD focusses on end-user experience with the product rather than forcing them to change their behavior to accommodate the product
Requirements
Design
Development
Verification
Delivery
User-Experience
6 principles for UCD
Design is based on explicit understanding of the user, tasks and environment
Users are involved throughout the design and development
The design is driven and refined by user-centered evaluation
The process is iterative
The design addresses the whole user experience
The design team includes multidisciplinary skills and perspectives
Product Manager may have to work with User Experience professionals
Application exercise
SJSU is considering to develop a new website.
What questions would you ask from UCD perspective?
7 Universal Design Principles Applied to SJSU Website
Equitable use: the design is useful and marketable to people with diverse abilities.
Keyboard, touch and braille
Flexibility of use: accommodates wide range of individual preferences and abilities, including right- or left-handed access and use
Language transcription
Simple and intuitive use: easy to understand
Personal landing page
Perceptible information: Communicates effectively
More pictures/videos vs. text
Tolerance for error: minimizes hazards
Student access vs. faculty
Low physical effort: Can be used efficiently and comfortably and with minimum fatigue
Gesture recognition?
Size and space approach and use
Seamless use between PC, laptop and mobile devices
Product Management and UX
While PM is focussed on market and customers’ business needs, user experience (UX) is focussed on the end-user’s interactions with the product
Interactions between them occur during the following activities:
Identifying and quantifying opportunities
E.g developing a “use case “ (a user interaction with the solution)
Example of use case for PC/laptop: powered ON inside the carrying bag
Product Management and UX (contd)
Writing requirements and validating solutions
Develop “wire frames” to elicit feedback – basic visual guides
Analyzing requirements and designing the solution
Develop story boards, flow diagrams to validate the workflow for the solution
Writing the specifications and building the solution
Conduct user acceptance test
