How Should Society Be Organized?
Question: How should society be organized?
In your answer, spend a paragraph addressing each of the issues addressed by the lectures.
Should government exist at all? If so, what justifies it? (Talk about anarchy and the social contract here.)
What is the government tasked to protect? Why (specifically) do people enter into the social contract and under what condition would they be justified in rebelling? (You will likely defend either Hobbes, Locke or Rousseau here.)
How much, and in what way, should the government interfere with the economy? (Talk about Smith, Marx and/or Keynes here.)
How much, and in what way, should the government regulate freedom of action and speech? (Talk about Mill here.)
How much, and in what way (if at all), should the government redistribute wealth? (This is Rawls vs. Nozick.)
Lastly…What form should the government take? Monarchy? Representative democracy? Pure (Rousseauian) Democracy? A lottocracy (where we choose our officials by a lottery system, like juries)?
In each paragraph, engage in with issues that we discussed in class. And don’t just give your opinion; take a position and defend it.
