Getting Started

With this accelerated class, we do not have time to cover every book in the New Testament, so we have looked at some big blocks and taken some samples from them. However, that still means that we have not had a chance to look at several of the shorter books. There are several letters of Paul that we did not read, and there are several more letters among the General Epistles that we have not had a chance to study. The General Epistles is the label for the various letters before Revelation that were not written by Paul but by other early Christian leaders (the letters of John are among these). This discussion will give you a chance to explore one of these other books and tie it into our ongoing discussions about Life and Faith in the New Testament. Choose one that is of interest to you and dive into it!

The following is a list of books that you can choose from. Two books have been left out because they are only one chapter long (Philemon and Jude).

· 1 Corinthians

· 2 Corinthians

· Galatians

· Philippians

· 1 Thessalonians

· 2 Thessalonians

· 1 Timothy

· 2 Timothy

· Titus

· Hebrews

· James

· 1 Peter

· 2 Peter

Upon successful completion of the course material, you will be able to:

· Explain aspects of God’s gifts and our response in from a selected book in the New Testament.

Resources

· Bible

· Your selected video from The Bible Project (on one of the books listed above).

Background Information

You have become familiar with the videos put out by The Bible Project. They have videos on almost every books of the Bible in addition to videos about key themes across Scripture. As a support for your discussion in this activity, you should find the video for your selected book in the New Testament and watch it. You will be asked to refer to the video at some point in your initial post.

Instructions

1. Review the assessment criteria in the rubric for this assignment.

2. Select a book from the New Testament that we have not studied in this course. For a list of possibilities, please see the list under “Getting Started” above.

3. Find the video from The Bible Project on your chosen book and watch it. You may find it helpful to take notes to help guide your reading later. Then, read your selected book and identify two passages in it that relate to the topics of Life and Faith. Both themes of Life and Faith should be discussed somewhere in your initial post.

4. Compose an initial post of 200-250 words that identifies your passages and explains where and how you see the themes of Life and Faith at work in each of them. You do not need to quote the entire passage, but you should use specific pieces of each passage in your explanation.
