Reflecting on how others perceive my values in comparison to my own stated values provides useful information about how those around me interpret my actions and behaviors. In my case, there appears to be some overlap and disparities between the values listed by my best friend, partner, and coworker and my own stated values of integrity, kindness, and respect. My best friend describes me as caring, selfless, empathetic, sympathetic, and dependable, which is consistent with values such as kindness and respect. My partner views me as intelligent, loving, capable, hardworking, and determined, which may represent values such as determination and competence. My coworker sees me as honest, an advocate, reliable, and competent, which aligns with my value of integrity.
It's interesting to consider the different contexts in which these interpretations of my values emerge. I understand that the context in which these relationships occur determines how my values are viewed. It's natural for me to alter portions of myself to the roles I play in different relationships, which can lead to variations in how others interpret my values. Reflecting on my values can help me overcome the shadows of leadership mentioned in the textbook by serving as a guide for my actions and decisions. By committing to my core values of integrity, kindness, and respect, I can navigate ethical dilemmas and lead with authenticity. Upholding these values can help me avoid abusing power, hoarding privileges, mishandling information, acting inconsistently, betraying loyalties, or failing to take on obligations, all of which contribute to casting shadows in leadership (Johnson, 2019).
To summarize, learning how others perceive my values in comparison to my own stated values gives me significant insights into how I appear in different relationships and contexts. Reflecting on my values and remaining true to them allows me to manage ethical problems in leadership while avoiding the shadows highlighted in the textbook. My values of integrity, kindness, and respect operate as a moral compass, directing my behaviors and decisions as I strive to be an ethical and effective leader.
