I define it in relation to this class as the process of a species being eradicated due to environmental changes caused by outside sources. This term is the ultimate end of a living species. It can have massive consequences to an environment if a species that the environment depends on is eliminated. When it comes to sustainability, extinction of a species can totally throw off how that environment exists. I know we are finding out that certain overly fished species are in danger of being fished to extinction if we do not find sustainable ways to collect them. One of the best ways to support sustainability in order to prevent extinction is buying food that is certified sustainable. Scientists around the world began embarking on a year round conservation and continuous project in accordance with Earth Day, named the Half Earth Project. This projects goals is to ensure that half of our Earth would be conserved in order to protect the Earth’s natural resources of land and water, wildlife, and biosphere to include human life. This project expands across the globe. Using sophisticated data analysis and current technology the scientists involved can locate where the most conservation of species and land is able to incur. It has been calculated that if 90% of the Earth’s habitat is removed, the number of species that can persist sustainably will descend to about a half. (Half Earth Project,2018) By conserving 50% of our global surface, the fraction of species protected will be 85%, or more. At one-half and above, life on Earth enters the safe zone.(Half Earth Project,2018) This project enables scientists to conserve areas of land and ocean, thus sustaining the biosphere and the wildlife species.(Our Planets Fight,2019) This project helps achieve environmental sustainability by progressively taking action to protect the inhabitants to include humans, in order to achieve a long-term environment capable of handling projected human growth and protecting our Earth from over usage of resources. The term Half Earth Project promotes awareness to citizens by symbolizing the goals of protecting half of the earth’s surface. This creates an image in the mind of individuals of how vast the conservation practices must be in order to sustain our current way of life for the future generations. By using the term Half Earth Project, it provides a visual for citizens in order to show the impact of continued unsustainable actions and allows them to think progressively towards the future. In order to support sustainability of our globe, there are multiple actions we can take as individuals. Small changes such as conserving our daily water usage impacts our environmental footprint, thus enabling the conservation of larger bodies of water and their natural inhabitants. Providing a natural biosphere within our own land (such as a backyard) instead of using building materials promotes the biodiversity of wildlife and the production of local wildlife population growth. In the community providing sources to recycle goods such as a recycling program with pick up, and the use of sustainable energy sources such as solar panels or windmills for energy help promote the project by using a decreased amount of area resources. Providing funding from national and global organizations in order to promote further research and providing laws that protect natural sanctuaries and wildlife refuges increases our chances to build a sustainable Earth. As individuals by voting for increased environmental protections and government officials who realize the impact, we as a society have on our Earth, we further promote sustainable practices and ecological advances in order to pave the way for future generations. Although a food web and a food chain are similar, they are still very different. A food webs allows the world to see the many different pathways that both plants and animals are connected. Inside the food web, it demonstrates several diverse feeding relationships that occurs within our ecosystem. The food web play an important role in the ecosystem because it shows a sequence in what animal or insect eats green plants, and what larger animals eat smaller animals and so forth. Food web relates to this week learning theme by showing how the food web and the ecosystem connects. The weather outside affects the world as a whole in many different places. For example, some animals have to live in colder weather while others need warmer weather. “Food webs are an integral part of every ecosystem on the planet, yet understanding the mechanisms shaping these complex networks remains a major challenge” (Borst et al, 2018). According to the University of Michigan, ever living organism depend on one another for food (University, n.d.). Organisms in food webs come together into groups called trophic levels. According to research, the food web is biodiversity and sustainability. In fact, the food web is more sustainable due to its high diversity. Sustainability is the skill to sustain something over a period of time. By the food web having a lot of biodiversity the ecosystem contribute to the sustainability. The food web has many different varieties of species, insects, and even green plants that shows what eats what and what is eaten by what. According to Holmgren, Johnston, and Spolarich, food webs are based upon the flow of energy and matter from one organism (Holmgren, Johnston, & Spolarich, 2018). The article also states that “food webs keep living organisms in balance” (Holmgren, Johnston, & Spolarich, 2018). One action we can take to promote environmental sustainability in relation to the food web is take meat production off the eliminating products that endanger our wildlife animals. When products are endangered and they are made from animals no open market can sell those products. We can also make wiser choices when it comes to water. By eliminating bottle water. We can preserve water by shortening our showers, having low flow appliances, and even many other things that obtain water within our home. What we can do is stop using bottle waters. Not only are they cost efficient, but the bottles end up in the streams with our species. So we can all try in our daily lives to stop using the.
