Chromium is a web browser project that was created by google. It is open-source browser that is a legitimate project, but it has been misused as a platform for malicious we browsers. It uses adware and potentially unwanted programs (PUP) to infect users’ systems with permission (Meskauskas, 2019). It is also a way that apps track internet browsing activity, generate intrusive advertisements, and cause unwanted browser redirects.
Typically, Chromium browsers are distributed using a software marketing method called “bundling”. This is a stealth installation of extra programs that comes along with the legitimate software. Most users are not aware of these programs being hidden in the download of the regular program and in the process, they download a rogue Chromium browser (Meskauskas, 2019).
This can affect a user’s system by stealing personal information and can share it with third party companies and is usually misused. With the information tracking that the browser does, can slow down your computer, it also causes browsing to slow down because it is bringing up random ads.
