Final Map Project
MY GOOGLE MAP FOR DUMMIES HIS 40B MODERN EAST ASIA
“Why Google map?” ! The Google map assignment is designed for you to have a geographical grasp of modern East Asian history.
1) GOOGLE: “GOOGLE MY MAP”
2) CREATE A NEW MAP
This is what you’re going to see when you first create your map
3) RENAME YOUR MAP
MAKE SURE TO WRITE YOUR NAME ON THE MAP
4) MAKE & RENAME LAYERS
5) MAKE 3 LAYERS (CHINA, JAPAN, KOREA)
6) REMANE THEM
Follow the instruction above (no. 4) to rename your three layers (China, Japan, Korea)
NOW IT’S TIME TO ADD YOUR MAP POINTS!
7) SEARCH FOR A LOCATION
You can search for a broad region (Beijing, Tokyo, etc.) or a specific place (Tiananmen Square, Pagoda Park, etc.) Find a location that is pertinent to the lecture or assigned readings.
8) NOW ADD IT TO YOUR MAP
9) WHEN THE DOT TURNS RED, IT’S ADDED TO THE MAP
NOW YOU HAVE BEIJING IN YOUR GOOGLE MAP UNDER THE “CHINA” LAYER!
10) WRITE A SHORT DESCRIPTION
THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR GOOGLE MAP. WRITE A SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE LOCATION. YOU CAN FIND THE INFORMATION FROM LECTURES OR ASSIGNED READINGS.
TELL US WHY THIS LOCATION MATTERS
11) FIND ONE LOCATION/LECTURE
• You can choose one location multiple times as long as you give different
descriptions of it. For instance, Shanghai was the place for the April 12th Incident (1927) and it was also the place where Korean communist party declared the Manifesto of Korean Communist Party (1921).
• You can also choose a location Outside of the East Asia. For instance, Portsmouth (NH, USA) was where the Treaty of Portsmouth, which formally ended the 1904–05 Russo-Japanese War, was signed.
• You also need to make your OWN decision to place regions in three modules. For example, should we put the Nanjing Massacre (1937) in China module? Or in Japan module? It’s your call.
AT THE END OF THE QUARTER, YOU WILL GET YOUR OWN MAP WITH MULTIPLE LOCATIONS THAT MAKES SENSE TO YOU.
