For my final project issue, I will write about same-sex adoption rights. This subject could affect me personally if I decide to adopt a child. Although I do not desire to have children, my partner does. To love them is to love everything they desire as well. Being a part of the LGBTQ+ community comes with many stigmas and mistreatment. Everybody experiences injustice and stigmas, but the moment someone knows you are LGBTQ+, they will start acting and treating you differently. As a society, we must understand that a personality does not define them. It is who they are. Simply stating that members of the LGBTQ+ are not allowed to adopt a child is saying that we are not eligible to be amazing parents to children who need a home filled with love. While the Establishment and Free Exercise Clauses can be seen as protective of two separate, distinct rights, their protections sometimes collide. For example, a government may pass a measure that purports to strengthen the free exercise of religion by exempting members of a religious group from a requirement that may violate the members' religious beliefs (Issa, p 226). Even though we are "allowed" to adopt, many states still have the right to refuse adoption based on the adoptive parents. This allows personal biases and discrimination to be placed on the parents. Thus, the adoption is supposed to be regulated around the children's best interest. It still remains subjective.
