2.2 Discussion. Practical Wisdom

Getting Started

Have you ever considered taking a strategic approach to developing your personal leadership styles and behaviors? For this week’s forum, we will use one of the principles we learned in the Critical Thinking course from early in this program to assess how we think about our thinking. You may recall that we called that metacognition. So, in our discussion this week, we will consider how to answer Drucker’s Five Questions from the perspective of our own self as leaders. (We will apply the questions to our chosen organizations in  Assignment 2.3 (new tab) .) Take a step back from your usual thinking process and reflect upon how your typical leadership practices guide your answers to Drucker’s Five Questions. Then, analyze your responses to determine if you’ve answered in ways that are considered wise. If not, how might you realign your thinking in order to pursue practical and wise responses?

Upon successful completion of this discussion, you will be able to:

· Explore how practical wisdom can be used to address significant organizational and societal issues.

Instructions

1. Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.

2. Read pages 273-279 from your Discovering Leadership textbook by Middlebrooks et al (used in multiple previous LDR courses).

3. View the YouTube video: Summary of the 5 Most Important Questions You Will Even Ask About Your Organization.

4. View the YouTube video: Peter Drucker’s Five Most Important Questions.

5. In your initial discussion post (250–300 words), respond to Drucker’s Five Questions not about your organization, but about your own leadership.

6. Review the Personal Brand Statement you wrote in the LDR-220 course, then consider how that activity might prepare you as you consider answering the following questions that examine your own leadership: For this forum, answer each of the questions as they apply to your own leadership:

a. What is  your mission?

b. Who is  your customer?

c. What does  your customer value?

d. What have been  your results?

e. What is  your plan?

f. How does  your cultural background play a role?

7. Then, reflect upon those responses. Be strategic and thoughtful, sharing how you might apply practical wisdom in ways that might change or even slightly modify how you would answer them. Be as specific as much as you are comfortable doing so.

8. Post your initial posting no later than Day 4 of the workshop week.

9. Respond to at least two others’ postings (150–200 words each) on two different days, by the end of the workshop. Simply responding with a sentence that reflects agreement with others’ postings is not an acceptable response. Instead, be sure to advance the discussion. In other words, build upon what has been posted so that our collective learning is enriched.

10. Be sure to incorporate at least two additional sources beyond assigned material in this course.

11. All postings should be thoughtful, but succinct. Please remember to cite your work where appropriate.
