1) An indifference map that consists of vertical lines indicates that the good on the x-axis is a normal good, while that on the y-axis is a neutral good. In the case of a neutral good, the consumer gains no satisfaction from any quantity of the good.

The consumer is indifferent between having or not having the neutral good. Thus there is no change in utility levels due to the y-axis.

2) Now, suppose that the two goods are interchanged on the two axes. Now, the neutral good is on the x- axis.

Now, the indifference map will consist of horizontal lines. The consumer's utility will change due to the changes on the y-axis (normal good).

There is no change in utility levels arising from the x-axis.
