Definition

In 400- 500 words, write an essay in which you define a “Good Fruit” as the phrase appears in the WUV motto “Good Tree, Good Fruit.”

Following the example of the student essays in Chapter 14, write an introduction which includes a thesis statement with three supporting points, followed by three supporting paragraphs each supporting a point with details and examples, and a conclusion.

Directions:

Remember that the thesis of the essay is a version of “What a Good Fruit means to you.” The thesis explains what your knowledge and experience have made you think what the phrase means to you.

As you plan your supporting paragraphs, think of different parts or qualities of your term. Here, for example, are the three-part divisions of the student essays in the chapter:

Football fans are crazy in terms of their behavior, their fascination with the past, and their loyalty.

Students zombies are the living dead, are controlled by a “mysterious force,” and are likely to suffer an awful fate.

Support each point with either a series of details/ examples or a single extended example.

You may find outlining to be the most helpful prewriting strategy for your definition essay. As a guide, write your thesis and three supporting points in the spaces below.

Thesis: _____________________________________________________________

Support: 1. __________________________________________________________

Support: 2. __________________________________________________________

Support: 3. __________________________________________________________

Write the first draft of your essay, reread it, and revise it in terms of the Four Bases Checklist for Definition given on page 338, John Langan, College Writing Skills with Readings.
