1302 Research Paper

For this semester’s research paper you will use an approved, argumentative question to

compose a convincing argument.

This paper will include identifying and integrating reputable sources to create a 1302-

level essay that explores one of the semester readings and offers thoughtful analysis and

synthesis.

The grading criteria are available for you (see “Researched Argument rubric” document).

The successful 1302 paper will include the following components:

 Minimum of four, full pages. Do not exceed seven pages.

 Background information in the introduction and throughout the essay that helps

the reader understand your topic

 Biographical information

 Critical commentary from approved sources

 Integration of sources that you have read and listed in Annotated Bibliography.

You need six sources for the bibliography; of the six, you must use at least three

in your research paper. The primary source counts as one source, so you will add

two additional sources.

 Summary, quotes, and paraphrases where they are needed: Most of the argument is

yours; the sources are used to emphasize your points, provide historical context,

clarity, and contribute specialized information.

 Formal language that: avoids first person and second person. Use third person

only; is free of colloquialisms unless used to enhance ideas; maintains an

academic tone from beginning to end

For more information about formal language, refer to document,” How to Have an

Academic Tone.”

 Clear paragraphs, topic sentences, and transitional words

 Effective use of MLA format including, but not limited to header, paging, font, in-

text citations and corresponding Works Cited entries. Research papers that fail

to include a Works Cited page and in-text citations will not receive a grade

higher than the “60s (D)” range.

 Adherence to all research-related deadlines.

The Research Paper is due by Sunday, May 9 th

at 11:59 p.m.
