Essay
Checklist for Essay 1
1. Make sure the essay title is properly formatted.
· Put essay/chapter titles and subheadings in quotation marks and book titles in italics
· Capitalize all the essential words in the title.
Example:
“As Others See Us”
“Getting to Know American Students”
“Relationships and Friendships”
“Bilingualism in America: English Should Be the Only Language”
My Freshman Year: What a Professor Learned by Becoming a Student
The Impossible Theater: A Manifesto
2. Introduce a summary paraphrase by providing the author’s full name and the essay title.
Example: In her chapter “As Others See Us,” Rebekah Nathan writes about her experience as a non-traditional student…
3. Refer to authors by first and last name or last name only. Referring to an author by first name only is too informal for an academic essay.
Example: Rebekah Nathan or Nathan
4. Cite all sources in your essay. Paraphrases and quotes need (1) signal phrases that include the author’s name and (2) citations that provide page numbers.
Example: Nathan says, “International students saw ‘individualism’ and ‘independence’ as characteristic not only of roommate interactions but of relationships with family and friends as well” (73).
Nathan, Rebekah (Cathy Small). “As Others See Us.” My Freshman Year: What a Professor Learned by Becoming a Student, Penguin Books, 2006, pp. 67-89.
NOTE: A pseudonym that takes the traditional form of a first and last name should be given last name first in the works cited, like an author's real name. A pseudonym that does not take the traditional form should not be changed. If you know the real name of an author listed under a pseudonym, you may add it in parenthesis.
