1.5 Assignment. Reflection Paper

Getting Started

While you have spent time this week considering training and development in your discussion posts, you have the opportunity to go deeper as you reflect on your personal experience with training and development.

Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:

· Discuss what training and development mean.

· Show understanding of the similarities and differences of training and development.

· Consider prioritization of training and development.

· Demonstrate consideration of leader growth through reflection.

Background Information

"An organization’s growth potential is directly related to its personnel potential...grow a leader––grow the organization” (Maxwell, 1995, p. 4).

Most leaders agree that training and development are important concepts, yet not all leaders make a practice of prioritizing these activities. Training and developing others takes time, and those leaders who commit to doing so reap the benefits of the multiplication effect of having more leaders and a stronger organization.

Instructions

1. Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.

2. Read Chapters 1–3 of your text, Developing the Leaders Around You.

3. Review the article  Training Versus Development(new tab)  by William Fitzgerald and watch the video  Training and Development(new tab)  (these are the same resources used for this week’s workshop discussion forum).

4. Write a two-page reflection paper (500-600 words double-spaced in a Word document), addressing the following reflection prompts:

a. How does your organization prioritize (or not) training and/or development?

b. In what ways could you contribute towards building a positive climate for potential leaders in your organization? What do you need to start doing? Stop doing?

c. What are the potential benefits for your organization to enhance its training and development practices for potential leaders? What are the consequences of failing to do so?

d. What are the 2 - 3 most important training and development insights you have gained for your practice as a leader.

5. Inasmuch as this is a reflection paper, first-person voice is acceptable. No additional sources are required, as well.
