1.4 Discussion. Training & Development

Getting Started

In 2006, managing editor of T+D, Paula Ketter described the seminal work of William Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald (1992) wrote that “understanding the distinctions [between training and development] will help you understand the processes that characterize training and development, and the ways in which they affect the short- and long-term success of the organization” (p. 81). In this discussion forum, we will consider the training and development, their similarities and differences, and how each applies to leadership development.

Upon successful completion of this discussion, you will be able to:

· Discuss what training and development mean.

· Show understanding of the similarities and differences of training and development.

Background Information

Your preparation for this discussion forum begins by reading the brief article,  Training Versus Development(new tab) , by William Fitzgerald. Please note the difference in definition and application of the terms training and development. Fitzgerald also provides information on creating a development plan, which may prove to be useful throughout this course.

Then, please view the 21-minute video “Training and Development”:

Instructions

1. Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.

2. Review the information in the Getting Started and Background Information sections.

3. In your initial discussion post (250-300 words), based upon your reading and review, what is the most significant insight you learned from the article and/or video about training and development? Discuss a situation in your experience where the "wrong" (training or development) approach was used (e.g., a training approach was used when development was needed or a development approach was used when training was needed).  What might the leader have done differently (and better!) in that scenario?

4. Be sure to incorporate at least two additional sources beyond assigned material in this course.
