Third one (name as “progress”)

Introduction
Asher Durand was one of the prominent founders of the Hudson River School of landscape art, so-named because early members generally focused on that region in Upstate New York. While these artists’ styles differed in their approach of the subject, Durand tended to paint Manifest Destiny in a good light. While he certainly celebrated the beauty of nature with every brush stroke, the small human figures and elements betokening human industry that often appeared in his works indicated his belief that civilization could coexist with nature in America. Yet coexistence would be on man's terms. In the 1853 painting Progress, Durand essentially showed his own form of domination over nature as well as documented human penetration of the wilderness and claims on the land.
Analyze the attached painting and answer the following questions:
1. How are the human and natural elements juxtaposed in Progress?
2. Discuss how an American might have interpreted Durand's "Progress" in the 1850s, and then how you interpret it today. What might such a comparison reveal about the nature of progress in America?

Fourth one (name as “court”)

Introduction
The trial and execution for murder of two Italian immigrant anarchists, Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, became one of the most controversial events of the 1920s and sparked a worldwide movement to save the condemned men. Their trial in 1921 took place in an atmosphere of anti-immigrant and anti-radical hysteria and was marked by flagrant appeals to prejudice by the prosecution and biased by the presiding judge. To many immigrants, including those who did not share Sacco and Vanzetti’s political views, the pair became symbols of the excesses of the anti-immigration movement that culminated in the 1924 law closing off entry for nearly all migrants from Southern and Eastern Europe. Overseas, the trial led to a transformation of the image of the United States from an asylum for liberty to the land where justice was perverted by the demands of the powerful. After six years of appeals, the two men were sentenced to death in 1927. Vanzetti's last statement in court reaffirmed his innocence and some of the reasons for the verdict.
Read the attached document and answer the following questions:
1. Why does Vanzetti feel that he did not receive a fair trial?
2. How do Vanzetti’s political views come through in his statement?
