Standard Deviation

I would appreciate a better explanation on how to get the answer with these 2 questions in Chapter 12 - Problem P6 and P8 for FIN 100. I have been back and forth through the book and it has been very confusing. Thanks for the help. Please see attached file with the problem. Thank you!!
