Topic Selection for Individual Speech Presentation
Review this week's lecture. Think about a communication topic that you would like to learn more about. Look at the Table of Contents in your textbook for more ideas. E-mail your instructor early in the week to obtain speech topic approval for an informative or persuasive speech. Research your topic and create a good thesis statement. Write at least three sentences for the main ideas concerning your topic. You will continue with this next week. Nothing is due yet in the Dropbox for your speech. Presentations are due in Week 6.
Note: Notify your instructor now by e-mail if you do not understand how to choose a speech topic.
Assignment: Conflict Analysis
Conflict Analysis Part 1: Observe an instance that you are not personally involved with where conflict is present (you will need to be a bit of a covert operator to accomplish this). Answer the following:
In several detailed paragraphs, describe the conflict scene.
1a. Who was involved in the conflict? What was the relationship between the participants prior to the conflict? Did it appear as if the relationship between the participants had any impact on how either person responded to the conflict?
1b. When and where did it take place? Was it formal or informal? Planned or unplanned? What impact did the location and time have on the outcome?
1c. What transpired? (Be specific.)
Many times when we face conflict, there is a surface-level problem and an underlying problem. The surface-level problem acts only as a symptom of the real problem. Consider both.
1d. What was the surface problem?
1e. What was the underlying problem, or the real problem? If this is unclear, what might you speculate the real problem to be?
There are many conflict management strategies that can be employed when dealing with conflict. Consider which were present in this conflict.
1f. Which conflict management strategies were employed by each of the participants? Did the conflict management strategies change during the course of the conversation? How do you know?
1g. What was the outcome? Was there a winner? A loser? Did there appear to be an impact on the relationship? If so, what was that impact?
1h. Looking back, describe at least two variables that could be changed in this scene to alter the outcome.
Conflict Analysis Part 2: Much of the learning in this course requires you to draw conclusions about your experiences and observations based on the concepts we have read about and discussed. Take this into consideration:
2a., 2b. List two specific things you learned about conflict as a result of this exercise. Reference material from the text, discussions, lecture, terminal course objectives, and so forth. Answers that demonstrate application of the course material and effective critical thinking will earn the greatest number of points.
Your submission should be approximately one page in length: one paragraph per item for 1a.–1h., and 2a. and 2b.
Submit your assignment to the Dropbox, located at the top of this page. For instructions on how to use the Dropbox, read thesestep-by-step instructions.
See the Syllabus section "Due Dates for Assignments & Exams" for due date information.
Course Project
Communication Change Challenge Part 2 (updated) due this week: Describing Communication Patterns. Please see the Course Project area for full assignment details.
Communication Change Challenge Part 3 due this week: Establishing Behavioral Goals. Please see the Course Project area for full assignment details.
Parts 2 and 3 require about two weeks to complete since they require you to observe and analyze your own communication patterns and observe the communication behaviors of others. As a result, these two parts are assigned in both Weeks 2 and Week 3. It is important that you get started now in order to ensure you will have sufficient time to observe these patterns and behaviors as they occur. Record daily conversations during these two weeks. Turn in your work each week. You have 15 days (Weeks 2 and 3) to record your conversations. Please see the Course Project tab for full assignment details.
Introduction
CCC Part 2 - Due this week. CCC Part 3 - Due this week.
Before you try to repair the problem identified in CCC Part1E, you first need to understand it. Keeping a log of instances when the communication behavior is most apparent, and reviewing your log for patterns, will lay the foundation for identifying how you will rectify the communication behavior later in the project.
Be sure to submit all of the deliverables outlined in the blue deliverables box.
CCC Part 2: Describing Communication Patterns
Now that you have committed to a communication behavior to address, the next step is to monitor your interpersonal communication behavior for 7–8 days as it relates to this issue.
2A. List your interpersonal communication goal from CCC Part 1E. Keep a DATED conversation log, spreadsheet, journal, or diary of SPECIFIC instances when you exhibited this behavior. Think about who, what, where, when, why, and how questions. Record who you spoke to, what you talked about, where you spoke, when you spoke – the time of the day, why you had this conversation – the circumstances, and how you spoke. Think about your feelings and your nonverbal communication. Did you listen well? Were you delighted, hurried, rude, polite, angry, frustrated, and so forth? Record other important or interesting conversations as well, even if they do not relate to your goal. You need at least five entries this week, but you may have many more.
Be sure to include an entry each day from the time you begin monitoring your communication behavior (conversations with others) until the time you conclude 2A. If you do not face your challenge on a particular day, say so. If you face other challenges, perhaps related challenges, on any of these days, include that as well. If you cannot document a conversation about your challenge that day, record another interesting or important conversation. You should have at least one daily entry for your conversation log, and you may have multiple conversations on the same day.
2B. Review your log and look for patterns. The following questions can help you to identify patterns of behavior. At what time and under what circumstances did I perform this behavior most effectively?
- In what places?
- With whom?
- Under what conditions?
2C. Review your log and look for patterns. The following questions can help you to identify patterns of behavior.
- At what time and under what circumstances did I perform this behavior least effectively?
- In what places?
- With whom?
- Under what conditions?
2D. Review your log and look for patterns. What other recurring communication behaviors did I exhibit when I did or did not perform this behavior?
2E. Review your log and look for patterns. What seems to be your most pressing behavioral pattern? Is your greatest communication problem the same one you listed in your goal for CCC Part 1E at the top of your page? Do you need to modify your goal for this project? If so, state your new goal by revisiting Part 1E in Week 1, Course Project.
Remember, you should identify these patterns from the log you have recorded over the entire week. When you make a statement about an observed pattern, be sure to document it with specific data/examples from your log. You may find at the end of logging your communication behavior that your challenge is not what you first thought it was. As a result, it is possible that you may ultimately modify CCC Part 1E at this point in the project.
| Report for CCC Part 2, due at the end of this week, at least five entries this week: In this section you are to describe, in detail, the patterns you observed that were related to your selected communication skill/behavior in CCC Part 1E. Use the process described above as a framework for this narrative, and include in CCC Part 2 of your report the following items: 2A. List your interpersonal communication goal from CCC Part 1E. A clean typed version of your notes in a DATED conversation log, spreadsheet, journal, or diary format that identifies SPECIFIC instances when you were faced with performing this behavior (instances when you were in a position to discipline your daughter, for example). Each entry should explain the who, what, where, when, why, and how of the conversation. See the detailed explanation above. 2B. A review of your behavior in a narrative format, which clearly identifies patterns of communication behavior, as described above on your most effective communication skills. Be sure to include specific evidence from your observations that support your identification of a particular pattern. 2C. A review of your behavior in a narrative format, which clearly identifies patterns of communication behavior, as described above on your least effective communication skills. Be sure to include specific evidence from your observations that support your identification of a particular pattern. 2D. A review of your behavior in a narrative format, which clearly identifies patterns of communication behavior, as described above on your other recurring communication behaviors. Be sure to include specific evidence from your observations that support your identification of a particular pattern. 2E. A review of your behavior in a narrative format, which clearly identifies patterns of communication behavior, as described above on your greatest communication problem. Be sure to include specific evidence from your observations that support your identification of a particular pattern. |
