Original Question: Organizations are increasingly transcending country boarders and physical space limitations. What are some effective strategies to motivate dispersed team members in a virtual setting? What are some emerging trends that deal with this challenge in your field? Provide an example.

 

Answer: Healthcare is a field that is growing daily due to the aging population and the increasing acuity due to technology advances. Our organization is spread across four campuses throughout the Midlands of South Carolina. One trend that is used daily and nearly everyone has access to is FaceTime. Whether on phones, laptops, or iPads, almost everyone has access to this form of communication. Lepsinger and DeRosa (2015) discuss how relationship and trust building is even more important in virtual teams because of the lack of in-person communication. FaceTime allows team members the ability to read expressions, body language, and other non-verbal cues that may otherwise be lacking in a virtual relationship. Casual communication is also suggested so that the relationships do not get too stuffy and there is room for personal growth (Lepsinger & DeRosa, 2015). With Millenials entering the workforce at lightning speed, it is more important than ever that we cater to their needs, preferences and learning styles. This technology savvy generation is going change the workplace to suite them if we have not already done so. Therefor, for best results, companies ought to modify their communication style for virtual teams if they have no already done so.
