There are many different behaviors that students can exhibit that make it difficult for teachers.  These behaviors can cause classroom disruptions and even delay lessons for long periods of time.  Fortunately, there are some ways that difficult behaviors can be dealt with in the classroom without having to send a student to the office.  One good strategy is by keeping the student in close proximity of the teacher.  This helps to prevent unwanted behaviors because the student will be easily caught.  Another good strategy is to know when to discipline the student.  By trying to call out a student in front of their friends and the class, the student may end up becoming a bigger disruption than what is already happening.  Ask the student to please stop and then enforce discipline and consequences at lunch time or after school.  One more strategy that could be use is by trying to find common ground with the student.  If a teacher can find a way to relate to the student, there is a better chance to connect and understand what is causing the difficult behaviors.  Then, it is easier it build a teacher-student relationship in the classroom.

Sending students to the office could actually show weakness on the teacher's behalf.  This may indicate that the teacher is not in total control of the classroom.  First off, sending the student to the office is a disruption and then when the student comes back, sometimes in a manner of minutes, there is an additional disruption.  The less often students are sent to the office or to an administrator, the less a teacher will have to plead for their students to behave, the teacher will not have to threaten to send students to the office as often and the teacher will also be able to limit reminders and chances that are given.  Administrators do not know a teacher's students as well as the teacher does.  This means the teacher has a better rapport and more influence over the student.  If a teacher can establish that they are the leader and decision maker of the class, their words will carry more weight, the teacher will be more respected and even admired by their students (Linsin, 2013).
