There are many reasons to teach reading comprehension in content area classes, the first being it provides the students with certain skills, and helps them to build upon their skills in other areas of the classroom, the second reason is it identifies main concepts, and provides comparisons in the different content areas.  One study claimed the following, “Comprehension of a text is made up of smaller pieces, all of which must come together in perfect harmony: background knowledge, interest in the topic, vocabulary skills, and the ability to make inferences, and judgments are all required, along with many other skills”.  And finally without reading comprehension students would not be able to learn in other subject areas.
