There is 1 discussion board assignment for this week.

  1. Respond to the following question/prompt: “In both ‘Cathedral’ and ‘Hills Like White Elephants,’ what the main characters see and observe — pay particular attention to each instance of the verb ‘look’ in ‘Hills’ — is incredibly important and provides a great deal of insight into the characters. Which of Carver’s and Hemingway’s details tell us the most about the characters, and why? Which details tell us the least? How do the meanings of details that are seen or observed repeatedly change over the course of the stories? And which story, in your opinion, is more effective in its use of ‘seen’ details?”

Share your responses on the discussion board by Thursday at 11:59 p.m. eastern. Then, by Sunday at 11:59 p.m. eastern, for each assignment, provide feedback to at least two of your classmates on their responses.
