Module 2 Discussion Board
In Chapter 8, Belknap spends some time discussing acquaintance rapes on university/college campuses. How does the university/college setting impact the victimization and reporting of sexual assault? Based on the risk factors presented in the text, what steps should be taken to prevent sexual assault on university/college campuses? How can the system respond more effectively when these crimes occur (reporting through conviction)?

As you learn more about IPA and stalking, consider the criminal legal response to these issues. What one area of the criminal legal response (ranging from advocacy to law enforcement to the courts to corrections) do you think is most in need of change, and why? How do you think this area of response could be improved?

I agree with the text in that, in order to respond to stalking and IPA in an effective manner, there is a need to coordinate efforts at all levels – the police, the judiciary and social services – as they all seem to have their own agendas.
I think that the area that is in need of change the most is law enforcement. My reasoning is that they (police) are the first responders; their actions, or lack thereof, play a major role as they relate to the recognition, intervention, and the pattern of re-victimization. If law enforcement ignores or fails to respond to stalking and IPA situations, they are conveying indifference and apathy that jeopardizes the victim, mentally and physically, and, in essence, perpetuates the inappropriate behavior of the offender.
I think this area of response could be improved by establishing set procedures, educational training, timetabled (i.e. annual) surveys and review for effectiveness specifically targeted to their community, cooperative community education and establishing a task force that coordinates these efforts.

Campus Victimization Campus Victimization
Going to college is like having a small community. If something happens everyone will eventually find out about it. The victim isn’t going to want the others students to know about the assault. UNK has a Women’s Center, a place where females can go in case something like this does happen. There they have someone to talk to and don’t have to ‘bottle up’ their feelings. If all campuses have something like this it could reduce the numbers of drop outs that are involved with sexual assaults.
Some steps that could be taken to prevent sexual assault would be to use the buddy system, know your limit on drinking or don’t drink at all, and if you are drinking always watch your drink. I also believe that it should be advertised that sexual assault can happen. Some people believe that it will not happen so they have nothing to worry about and don’t need to pay attention to their surroundings when at a party or out at night. The system doesn’t take every report seriously, which they need to. If someone is accused of sexual assault and is not charged they could do it again thinking that they could get away with it.
