In my opinion, I am not surprised that hate crimes are a serious problem on college campuses. I think the case of having hate crimes going on in campus is because you get groups of people that are from different race, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation and have strong beliefs you are bound to get different reactions and speeches.
I am aware of hate crimes going on in our UNK campus. I have seen people being rude and mean to the students that come from other countries. I remember my sophomore year in college I had became friends with these two girls a year younger than me. These two girls were a couple. there was this dance going on, on campus there was a drag show as well. I had got invited to the drag show by these girls and the performers were going to be different singers. I found it interesting and I decided to go and show support. The second I walked in the door I was immediate asked that how could I go to something like that when I was married and had kids. I didn't think that just because I was married with kids I could go to see a show and show support to my fellow classmates. I felt upset, hurt and most of all sorry for that person to have the nerve to judge me. I am a person that is curious and when I meet another person from a different race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation I am always willing to talk and get to know them more. I love people and I love to socialize. I don't understand how people can be so mean and rude to others. I believe that if people start to raise awareness and educate the students on campus we can over come all the hatred, discrimination on campus. The person to lead this awareness should go in with an open mind accept everyone, be optimistic and be positive for the awareness to be a success.

In all reality I think hate crimes have a serious affect on college campuses all over the country. There are many different types of hate crimes that occurs all over. What is important to address in this situation is that when a person graduates high school, they were more used to the home life of their parents. They were not targeted and attacked within their home. When they move to a new town and meet new people, many times those who are targeted are vulnerable. I am not surprised that hate crimes are a problem within the college campuses because of the many different races as well as different cultures. When we talk about a campus such as UNK, I am aware that people are targeted within the campus regarding their race and genders. I also think that noncriminal acts of harassment areprevalent but in my opinion are often times are not brought into the social aspect of campus. I think these acts are common but are not talked about. I think law enforcement needs to be used within these situations. I also think the campus needs to have programs that address students and educate them about hate crimes. Sometimes hate crimes are committed and they have no idea that they are perpetrators. I also think students are not aware of the fact that they are victims of hate crimes and do not know where to go once they realize they are victims.
