Theory
COLLAPSE
The social disorganization theory made the most sense in my opinion. Thrasher states that gangs thrive in the ghettos and slums where the areas are blackened, unpainted, and besmirched with the smoke of industry. He also claims gangs provide interstitial activities for their members. The gang members resolve to crime such as drug trafficking, gun running, and theft, to name a few. When there is no organization within a neighborhood, the crime will skyrocket due to this theory. Ineffective family members and poor schooling makes the choice easier for kids to join gangs.

Dallas,
I completely agree with you. It's interesting to see that neighborhoods that lack organiztion have the most troubles although you can kind of assume it. It may sound like a sterotype but when you look at the big picture, like we see in the social disorganization theory, it is in fact, the disorganized neighborhoods where gangs form. This can be due to lack of supervision, schooling, structure and so on.

I believe the theory that best explains the gang problems in communities is the social disorganization theory because crime is more likely to develop in poor and disorganized communities. Disorganized communities do not offer their residence protection of crime or opportunities to advance economically. The weak social institutions that help individuals succeed can be replaced by gangs. In a community were indiviuduals are limited in opportunities can find them in gang membership or activities. Having a very unstable environment can be filled by gang organization. In sort gang are seen as a survival strategy in a poor and disorganized community.

Yesenia,
I agree with you 100%. If a community is very poor, obviously they are going to have little funding for protection, schooling, and so on. Without those very important things, it's obvious people are just going to steer themselves into the wrong direction. In this case, many gangs form and it's hard to keep them under control, especially with little funding.
