Part 1

On only just one (1) page from the book “The Spirit catches you and you Fall Down”

a)     What are the most important aspect of Hmong culture? What do traditional Hmong consider their most important duties and obligations?   How did this affect the Hmong’s transition to the United States? What do American doctors consider their most important duties and obligations? How did this affect their ability to work with the Lee family?


b)    What was the “role loss” many adult Hmong faced when they came to the United States? What is the underlying root cause? How does this loss affect their adjustment to America?


c)    The only American who fully won the Lees’ trust was Jeanine Hilt, their social worker. Why did Jeanine succeed where so many others failed?

Part 2

a)     Paying close attention to the news, because policy and other current events often directly affect our clients and our abilities to serve them. Find up to 2 Media articles from credible daily newspapers (not websites, not magazines, not bulletins) that relate to a major health issue or health care practice or policy at the local, state, or national level.


b)   Write a 2 page response paper for each article. The response paper should include each of the following:
       

*your summary of the main points of the article (no more than ¼ page)
       
*what the issue is (e.g., a new health concern, a policy change, or issue related to health care provision).
       
*identification of who is impacted by this issue (directly and indirectly)
         
*your reaction to/opinion about the issue
       
*You will be expected to turn in each article (or copy of) with your response paper
