Lesson 08:
For this lesson, we are going to see how well you understand genres. Select a book. The book of choice is Too kill a Mocking bird by Harper Lee.
Your task is to determine the genre (or genres) the work is written in, explain what genre it is and why, and then re-write the work into a poem.
This lesson has different parts to it.
Part 1:
Submit the title and author of the book you've selected, as well as its genre. Write a brief paragraph explaining why the work fits the genre you've selected.
Part 2:
Now write your poem. Your poem needs to meet the following criteria:
It needs to rhyme, or include some rhyming scheme.
It should be at least 40 lines long. You may write a longer poem if you wish.
It should cover the main plot and significant characters from the book.
Part 3:
Step 1
You are going to choose a position regarding a debatable topic, and write an essay that presents an argument supporting your position. The topic is:
• Home-school vs. public-school education
In this step you will only provide:
• state the topic that you have chosen and the position that you will argue.
• find and list at least three resources to support your side of the argument.
• research your topic to find the pros and cons of your position, and provide a list for each.
Step 2
Now that you have completed step 1, prepare for your debate by writing a 750-word essay based on your research. The essay should state your side of the argument, and state the pros and cons of your position. You will need to use your research to support your ideas. Use parenthetical citations and list your sources in a Works Cited list at the end of your essay.
