Develop a PowerPoint presentation (12-15 slides) for new special education teachers who have been hired in your district.
Include the following:
Describe the characteristics of children with a learning disability.
Explain what these behaviors would "look like" in the classroom.
Create a fictitious student (age, gender, grade etc.) with a learning disability and address the following:
1) Choose a specific learning disability, discuss the characteristics of the disorder you have chosen, and develop an IEP based on the student's needs. Remember, the federal definition of specific learning disability is: "a disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using language, spoken or written, that may manifest itself in an imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell, or to do mathematical calculations, including conditions such as perceptual disabilities, brain injury, minimal brain dysfunction, dyslexia, and developmental aphasia" (IDEA, 1997).
2) Choose one area such as math, language arts, social skills, reading, communication, behavior, or functional life skills to write an IEP based on the learning disability you have chosen.
3) Describe how the disability will affect student learning, participation, and involvement in general education.
4) Discuss present levels of academic achievement and performance.
5) Discuss measurable annual goals.
6) Discuss how goals are to be measured.
7) Create benchmarks and short-term objectives.
8) List any additional special education services that might be required.
9) List any special education services that may need to be modified to meet the needs of your student.
10) Who would be part of the IEP team participants?
11) What is the procedure when a parent is missing from the team (e.g., method of contacting the parent, documentation of effort to involve parent).
