Information literacy is the ability to think critically about finding, evaluating and using information for a specific purpose, whether for educational research, on the job decision making, or personal need. This lifelong skill comes in handy when researching a medical intervention, when voting, starting a new job, or any other big decision. This assignment will help you begin or improve these skills by introducing you to resources you may not know you can access.

1. Select a controversial topic that interests you.

2. Begin your research on the selected topic to inform yourself of both sides of the issue so that you can argue your point as clearly and strongly as possible. You may use newspapers, journals and webpages from the library databases using the tips given to you by the Online Librarian.

3. Next write your essay. Clearly state the issue, your position, and the support for your position. Do your best to avoid vagueness and ambiguity. Be sure to include both sides of your controversial topic (facts). It may be helpful to outline your own argument either before or after you write it to make sure that it is clear and well structured. Be sure to include the title  page with your name, course, section and date and the reference list.

4. Make sure that you follow the proper format (APA). Anything that you did not write, or paraphrase must be cited. You must clearly cite your sources with complete bibliographical information. You may do this either with footnotes, parenthetical citations, or end notes.

Sources that are not cited constitute plagiarism and are subject to a zero for this assignment.
