OSI Model

Many people use expressions or sentences to remember the OSI layer names.  Similar to how you use "Roy G Biv" to remember the color of the rainbow.

Can you share what method you use to remember the names of the 7 layers?

Bridges vs. Routers vs Gateways

What are the differences between Bridges, Routers, and Gateways?

when would you use one over the other? What OSI layer does each of those devices work in?

Explain in detail.

Broken Repeater

You have two workstations over 400 feet apart.  The previous Network Administrator has inserted a Repeater at the middle of the two computers.

The cable was Cat5e.  You found out that the repeater is now broken and need to be replaced.  But the replacement Repeater will not get here until next week and it is critical that you re-establish the network connection.

You checked your network supplies closet and found that you have various networking equipments and supplies including routers, switches, hubs, Ethernet NICs, 801.11b USB Network Adapter, various cables and connectors, etc.

What can you use from your existing spare parts or supplies to reconnect the two computers again?  Explain your answer.

Connection-oriented vs Connectionless

Compare and contrast these two types of communications.

Then find one example each of a network protocol widely used today that are based on these.

Try to find network protocols that are comparable (meaning that they are doing very similar things).

FTP vs. SFTP vs. TFTP

What are the differences?

Find scenarios where you would use one over the other.  Why?  Explain in deta

Network Protocols

TCP/IP is the dominant network protocol in use today.

Find a few other network protocols that are still in use (although not as widely).  Why is that protocol not as widely used today? On the other hand, what makes it so that this protocol is still in use today (what specific application or system that still require that protocol to be use)?

Broadcast vs Collision Domains

What is the difference between a broadcast domain and a collision domain? Given a choice which one you would prefer? Explain your answer.

Layer 3 Switch vs. Router

What is the difference between a router and a layer-3-switch?

When would you use one over the other?

Explain.
