The facts that are pertinent to an ethical evaluation are clear in this case. The fact that she lied on her resume about her finishing her degree and willingly did it was a red flag. For Christie H to come to you and ask for you not to mention being in the same class because of what she put on her resume she already knew what she was doing was wrong and not morally right.

From the facts and information provided, Christie H clearly ignored the values and reasoning of business ethics. Doing this easily brings upon counterarguments that can lead to her being discharged from a job or in this case not being considered for the position because of her choice.

Doing “nothing because she’s doing her job just fine” is not the best response or way to go in this case. This is because if she lies to try and get what she wants in this case, she would more than likely do it again. “People feel inadequate and that they have to do whatever it takes to get their foot in the door (Grinberg, 2012).” This is a great quote, which is seen a lot when it comes to business ethics. Many will try to “beat the system” to get ahead. And some may feel that in order to get ahead, business ethics may go out the door.

Everyone wants better. In order to achieve better one should continue to have great work ethics and great values when it comes to the workplace and their accomplishments. She may be a great employee but that one flaw of ignoring business ethics can do much harm for that individual as well as the company.

There are two facts of this case study that are pertinent to an ethical evaluation of the case.  The first is that the newly hired assistant accountant has been working competently and responsibly for a period of six months.  The second pertinent fact is that she was untruthful about having a college degree on her employment application when she did not in fact have a degree.  These facts are very contradictory of each other.  On one hand you have a new employee that seems to be a good worker and responsible.  On the other hand there are now questions about her integrity.  These facts set up the ethical dilemma.

Now faced with weighing the values of this dilemma in order to come to the best conclusion.  If the supervisor decides to bring the issue to the human resources department for clarification of company policy on this issue then he/she probably has set a slightly higher value on integrity and honesty than on job performance.  Or the supervisor is struggling with his/her own morals and is taking the decision out of their own hands.

The fact that she has proven to be a competent assistant accountant does have significant value. Competent and dependable employees are a vital part of any organization.  Having to find a new assistant would take time and money as well.  Depending on the qualifications of the position she may not needed to embellish her education status, but if she is doing a good job the supervisor may decide to do “nothing because she’s doing her job just fine”.  Perhaps the supervisor could place the employee on a probation of some sort in order to further evaluate the situation and determine what is best for the company.
