1.Slavery has been referred to as “America’s original sin”. The responses to slavery (including segregation) and the sectionalism (north/south) that those responses helped to spawn, loom large in the history of 19th- and 20th-century Methodism. Also important, and sometimes related, was Methodism’s relationship with politics and civil discourse, as well as “civil religion”, both in the North and the South during the Civil War, and in the reunited country afterward.
