math project
Project Assignment:
In this project you are to create a résumé (or curriculum vitae) for a famous mathematician.
Finding your mathematician: The St. Andrews University site listed below has links to short biographies of many mathematicians and mathematician biographies can also be found in Victor Katz’s book.
Résumé: The résumé you create must include at least the following categories, in proper résumé format:
Personal Information of the mathematician (name and address, contact info)
Education
Job Experience
Publications and/or famous results (citing one specific problem and expand in one
paragraph)
Professional Societies, if any
Relevant Interests
References-Mentors, Colleagues
The résumé must be informative! It should be at least 1 full page but not be more than 2 pages long. The Career Development Center at CSUSB has quite a lot of information on writing resumes, so it would be helpful to check out their web site at http://career.csusb.edu or go to their office in UH 329 for material.
Possible Resources:
- One (of many) useful sites is the “MacTutor History of Mathematics Archive” at St.
Andrews University; the page is at http://www-history.mcs.st-and.ac.uk.
- Another good resource is A History of Mathematics by Victor Katz.
- The library (http://www.lib.csusb.edu/) also has history of mathematics books. Please use all of your resources.
General:
The completed project is due on Friday, June 3rd
Please use a cover page to identify yourself and to list your sources and resources.
The résumé must be typewritten and printed out on plain white paper in an 11 or
12-point font. Use either Arial or Times New Roman font.
Although you may work together with classmates, you should write up your
results and résumé independently. If I have reason to suspect that work was copied all parties involved will split the points – therefore, you should not allow a classmate to copy your work unless you want to risk receiving half credit, or less.
If you do work with a classmate you must add them to your list of resources.
