Simulation- Nut Company Names_______________________
The Problem
A Nut Company is having a contest. On the inside of each package of nuts the letters N, U, or T are printed in ratios 3 : 2 : 1, respectively. If you can collect enough packages to spell the word NUT, you will win a prize. How many packages do you think you might have to buy before you spell the word NUT?
Make a Guess
Guess!! I think I might have to buy ________________packages.
Simulation
1). There are three white chips (representing the letter "N"), two red chips
(representing the "U") and one blue chip (representing the "T"). These amounts correspond to the ratio 3 : 2 : 1. Put the 6 chips into a paper bag.
2). Shake the paper bag with the chips in it and pull out a chip without looking and record
the corresponding letter. Put the chip back in the bag and do it again. Keep shaking and drawing until you have gotten all three letters. Record how many tries it took.
Example: N, N, U, N, N, U, N, T ............. 8 tries
(this number represents the number of packages you might have to buy to spell the word NUT)
3). Do this experiment a total of 10 times, recording your results in the table below.
4). Then find the average (mean) number of packages purchased.
= _______________
Question: Did your average number of purchases match up with your guess at the top of this sheet?
