M10 Discussion (original post): The Origins of Black Feminism & The Obama Presidency

(Discussion Expectations: Lively discussions are welcome, but in order to meet class expectations, please provide an original post response of at least 200 words to one discussion.

Original Post:  Discuss the origins, development, and ideas of black feminism.  How is it different from, or similar to, white feminism?  What problems have black women specifically had to face and work to overcome? Is this movement related to other movements that are further diversifying perspectives in black communities?

Original Post: Discuss whether the election of Barack Obama indicated the “triumph of black politics”.  What types of opposition has Obama faced as president and why? What remains to be done to improve blacks’ situation in America?  Can these achievements be accomplished supported by Obama's presidency?  Have we seen resistance to African American advancement during the Obama Presidency?

The American Life": The Problem We All Live With, Part I

New York City schools are the most segregated in the nation.  This trend shows up in northern and urban centers all over the country, and American schools are more segregated by race today than they were in the late 1960s. 

So, why can’t we rid our nation of segregation and race-based school resource gaps?

"This American Life" is known for it’s in-depth storytelling-style reporting on major issues.  They’ve done very good work on schools, housing, and segregation.  Journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones points to her studies and reporting to explore these ideas.

• Discuss what this podcast story has to teach us about the history of school segregation, integration, and re-integration.
• Ensure that your paper demonstrates your comprehension of this story.
• In your discussion, provide clear connections to the the text and themes from the course.
• Ensure that you provide at least one quote per required source/media item in your essay.
• Ensure that your essay is at least 400 words
• Remember to follow the essay template for this course to format your paper, and include the title of all discussed materials, such as the name of the radio show, in your essay
