A mine car (mass 440 kg) rolls at a speed of 0.50 m/s on a horizontal track (see gure). The wheels of the
car have a negligible friction on their axles and roll perfectly on the rails. A 150-kg chunk of coal has a
speed of 0.80 m/s when it leaves the chute, which has an inclination of 25 with the horizontal.
(a) Is Linear momentum conserved in the vertical direction? Explain.
(b) Is linear momentum conserved in the horizontal direction? Explain.
(c) Determine the velocity of the car/coal system after the coal has come to rest in the car.
