WEEK 1

"Strategies for Reading Critically"  Please respond to the following:

• Describe the challenges you have with reading certain types of written works (e.g., textbooks, academic papers, lab reports, government documents, or other type(s)). 
  
  
• Explain the primary goals you have when reading textbooks and other academics papers.
  
  
• Recommend one (1) pre-reading strategy to help students set goals and one post-reading strategy that helps you recall material for use in writing about the material.

WEEK 2

"Compare Two Versions of the Same Article by an Author"  Please respond to the following:

• Read the two (2) versions of the article titled: “The Objectification of Women. Whose Fault Is it?” by Santi DeRosa in Chapter 8. Identify the thesis statement of each version. Summarize the second or final version. Note any changes between the first and the second version. Indicate if the thesis statement changed. Discuss your agreement or disagreement with DeRosa’s views. 
  
  
• Identify three (3) changes the writer made between the first and second version. Speculate on reasons the writer made the changes.

"Evaluating Web Sources and Identifying the Audience"  Please respond to the following:

• Identify three (3) Websites that you plan to use for your research on a paper to convince. When evaluating, think of yourself as an investigative reporter who is checking the claims of a politician who used the sources in his or her proposed bill. Identify the Website and its URL.  Evaluate each Website regarding the following:
• Targeted audience
• Updating of information
• Use of professional peer reviews
• Information’s accuracy, relevance, and thoroughness

WEEK 4

"Analyzing Essays that Offer Solutions to Problems"  Please respond to the following:

• Read the three essays in Chapter 11 (“The Nursing Crisis; The Solution Lies Within,” “An Open Letter to the Community,” and “Request for a Work Schedule Change.”) Analyze the arguments and compare the effectiveness of their thesis statements, proposed solutions, and evidence. 
  
  
• Identify which one you think is most effective. Explain.
