Middle Ground Discussion- I will chose my Toulmin argument to discuss. My Toulmin essay was about the importance of financial planning. My claim was that financial planning should be the foundation for everyone's life. I proved that claim by stating some sources that gave different positive viewpoints on the importance of financial planning. If I were to use the middle ground proposal for this topic I would have adjusted my claim to state that basically as long as you start financial planning at some point in your life, it is better then not. This is not a practical solution,  but it easier for those people whom have not started financial planning take seriously.

Concluding remarks- Honestly I will probably never use these methods of argumentation in my career field. I do not write papers or have any written communication except emails. For my career path these are not as important to me. I think it was a good thing to know for the future but other than that I do not plan on using these very often. I also do not believe I will need these for any future courses with AMU. All in all I am glad I learned this information.

On my Toulmin essay, I wrote about mandating universal helmet law across all states. Here is the claim that I presented on my Toulmin essay: universal helmet law should be mandatory across all states because wearing helmets decreases the probability of traumatic brain injuries, facial injuries, lowers overall healthcare costs and generally decreases severity of injuries from crashes. I proved the claim by providing current statistics from peer review journals. Additionally, the sources that I used strongly back up the claim because it provided the data required to support each aspect of the claim. If I would have approached this topic utilizing the middle ground argument, I would have presented the claim in a different way. For instance, I would have presented the claim in a way where the opposition had the opportunity to have a valid reason to make their argument considerable in order to agree to a middle ground. For example, mandating wearing helmets only while riding on interstates and highways. I believe I could have used the sources presented in my Toulmin essay for a middle ground argument as well. I don’t think a middle ground solution is more practical for my chosen issue because most data presented in studies have proved that in order to be safe while riding a motorcycle, all the proper gear has to be implemented at all times in order to prevent further and deadly injuries. Although, there is a middle ground possibility for this issue but is dangerous and risky for the rider.

For my Toulmin paper, I wrote about how I felt that there should be no prohibition on drugs because it creates more issues and crime than it resolves. My thesis for my Toulmin paper was that studies over fifteen years in other countries show signs that decriminalizing drugs may lead to a decrease in violent crime, disease and homicide here in the United States. The way that I made a case for this argument was referring to the affects of prohibition on alcohol and how it created the mob because regardless of making the substance illegal, there was still a market for it. I then showed how prohibiting drugs from being used in the United States is causing the crime from cartels in todays society, and no matter how many laws are put in place for it, as long as there is a demand, people will find illegal ways to acquire the substance. I made points that drugs should be treated as a health issue and not a criminal issue.

I suppose the best way to write a middle ground argument on this topic would to just settle on making marijuana legal for now, and maybe to wait until there is more evidence collected in other countries trying the anti-prohibition approach before this country decides to take such a big step in that direction. I don’t think it would be difficult to find more sources for this claim because most of the country is leaning in this direction as it is. I also think that this argument would be much easier to get people to understand than the argument that all drugs should be legal, which is a difficult one to get people onboard with right now.
