From the late Middle Ages through the Enlightenment and sometime after, mathematics was increasingly seen as a way to describe natural phenomenon precisely. Up to the end of the 19th century the universe was seen as mechanical, all of the observed, complex motion and forces seen in nature were thought to be deterministic. How does the modern, scientific world view differ?

    What 20th-century developments in science and mathematics led to such a radical change in outlook on nature?

·       Based on your readings and discussions during the course, do you think the level of prosperity of a given society influences the development of mathematics and scientific knowledge in that society? Provide examples of how these issues might be connected. Do you think that the prosperity enjoyed in the developed world endows a responsibility to share knowledge with developing nations?
