Remember, this is a proficiency exam, a timed essay that assesses three basic qualities of essay writing: clarity (correct grammar and syntax), coherence (an organized structure), and support (developed reasoning and specific evidence to support it).  Make sure that your essay demonstrates all three of these qualities by taking the time to review your work (and in some cases re-copy it) before you turn it in.  You should bring your lap top, a dictionary, and the Prentice Hall Reference Guide. You may NOT bring any notes, drafts, or other books to the exam.

Directions:  Please read the following brief article and write a fully developed essay that first summarizes and then responds to the author’s position.  In your response, you are strongly encouraged to develop a specific analysis of the article’s major points.  In other words, identify particular aspects of the article that you can expand upon or, perhaps, counter in a way that allows you to express your own point of view.  Feel free to cite from the article, using summary, paraphrase, or direct quotations as a foundation for your response, but do remember to properly credit your source, no matter what form of source citation you use.
