Divide and Classify Essay Assignment
Directions:
1. Select a topic
a. Forbidden topics: movies, sports, books, music, food, perfect man/woman, video games, social media, gun control, study abroad/travel/vacations, animals, transportation devices
You do not need to do research. Pick a topic you can write about I’m interested only in what you already know about your topic.
4. Write an introductory paragraph.
a. Catch your reader’s interest
i. Story
ii. Quotation
iii. Fact, statistic, or definition
iv. Question
b. Give some general information about your topic.
c. Explain your purpose for choosing this topic.
d. End your introduction with a thesis statement.
5. Write a thesis statement that indicates the three categories you plan to discuss. Your thesis should include an argument that you will make in the main body of the essay.
a. Example: Although there are many types of pie, pie can be classified into three main categories: fruit dessert pies, non-fruit dessert pies, and dinner pies. Each type of pie has some merit, but fruit dessert pies are the best.
6. Write at least three paragraphs to support your thesis.
a. Each paragraph should have a topic sentence.
b. Each paragraph should have a transitional sentence.
