Disscusion

Group socialization is the communication process in which new and established group members adjust to one another. Both existing members and new members must be willing to adapt to one another for effective group socialization. Consider how best to accept newcomers into different types of groups.

Please respond to all of the following prompts:

  • Think of a situation (personal or hypothetical) where a newcomer came into a well-established group. How did the newcomer affect the task and social dimensions of the group?
  • Was the acceptance into the group a smooth process? If so, describe the strategies the newcomer employed to gain acceptance. If not, describe what went wrong.
  • If the newcomer acceptance was successful, describe the strategies established members of the group employed to make group socialization a smooth process. If not, describe what went wrong and what the newcomer could have done to facilitate group acceptance.

Essay (Group Development Scenario)

Group development can be a complicated process, sometimes going through one phase several times, and occasionally, one phase is skipped altogether. This assignment will help you see how each of the phases happens in real-world situations.

Your assignment is to write a 2-3 page scenario about a hypothetical group and its development through the four phases. As an option, you can use a personal experience from your own life.

  • Write a brief definition of each phase of group development and describe how your group proceeded through each phase.
  • Be sure to explain how the task and social dimensions of the group affected its development throughout each phase.
